Since Daizsa’s mysterious death in March where she was discovered smothered to death inside a Kansas City motel room, friends and family members wondered who would want to hurt the honor student.

On Thursday, 40-year-old Jerry Bausby appeared before a Jackson County judge, who entered a not guilty plea for Bausby, who is in the process of waiting for a defense attorney. His cash bond was set at $750,000.

Bausby was charged with murder in the first degree. He was also charged with sodomy, incest and sexual assault, according to records obtained by PEOPLE.

On March 20, Daizsa received a call from her father, who picked her up from her house at about 8:30 p.m., according to the charging documents. An hour later, surveillance video captures Bausby is seen renting a room at 4 Acres Motel.

Someone matching his description is spotted again walking away from the motel at about 3:30 a.m. Four days later, police arrested and interrogated Bausby about the incident.

“[J]erry Bausby admitted that he picked up Daizsa at the family house … and rented the room at the motel for the victim and ‘some of her friends,’ ” according to the statement. “He stated that he only stayed at the room for 20 to 30 minutes and then left and walked to a friend’s house.”

While police waited for DNA results, Daizsa’s family and friends mourned the loss of an exceptionally talented student who was months away from graduating fourth in her class and speaking as salutatorian at her graduation.

Hayley Steele, one of her teachers at Southwest High School, told the Daily Released newspaper that Daizsa was one of the first students she met.

“Daizsa was going places and all the kids here knew that, and they felt like she was going to make it, for us,” said Steel. “From the moment I met her, I knew that she was special. She had gone through a lot. Her family life was tough, but she was the most positive person I’d ever met.”

According to reports, Daizsa was preparing to attend Grambling State University after receiving more than a dozen offers to attend various universities. Calls to family members were not returned.
