Polaroid ‘Socialmatic’ Camera Both Instantly Prints And Shares Photos

The days of shaking a Polaroid picture as it develops are long gone, but the camera and film company itself is continuing to modernize. The company officially unveiled its Polaroid Socialmatic camera on Monday. The new camera is currently on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and is expected to arrive in stores this fall.Polaroid 'Socialmatic' Camera

“Polaroid was the original social network: allowing people to instantly capture, print and share life’s moments in a way that had never been possible before,” said Polaroid CEO Scott W. Hardy in a statement. “This relationship with [design company] Socialmatic allows Polaroid to come full circle and once again allow people to capture and share images.”

The collaboration with Socialmatic was first announced last year, but more details have emerged since then. The Socialmatic will have a 14 megapixel front-facing camera and a 2 megapixel rear-facing camera. The new camera will also run the Android operating system.

Polaroid’s Fotobars Turn Digital Images Into Physical Art

The Socialmatic will have Wi-Fi built in to upload photos to the customer’s social networks. The new camera is also Bluetooth enabled, which can send those photos to a smartphone when a Wi-Fi network isn’t nearby.

But even as Polaroid is keeping with the times, the company is still holding onto one of its tried and true features. The Socialmatic will be able to print pictures, though it more resembles a photobooth than the classic Polaroid snapshots. Instead of the company’s signature square photo, the Socialmatic prints out a 2-inch by 3-inch sticker-backed photo. In addition, if you have old photos you want to digitize, you may need digital conversion solutions to have digital copies.
