Simple Ways Technology Has Imroved The Lives Of Cooks And Caterers Over The Last 100 Years

Kitchens of today are far removed from anything you would have encountered in 1914. Apart from the fact that food was scarce due to a world war, technology had not yet advanced to anywhere near the levels we see in modern times. Food preparation was a long and hard job back in those days, and this morning we’re going to look at some of the main changes that have occurred. It is important that we all remember our history and the way things used to be, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the wonders of modern technology.

Kitchens of today

Anyone who works in a kitchen these days will be thankful of the devices and machinery available to them. Without having these devices, their jobs would be far more difficult. Restaurants simply wouldn’t be the same, as you would have to order some dishes days in advance. Anyway, let’s get started…

Electric and Gas Ovens

While gas ovens had been invented by 1914, they were far too expensive for the average cook or caterer. That is why most professional kitchens would have been fitted with coal or wood burners. The main issues with them related to the fact that it was very difficult to maintain a specific and constant temperature. On top of that, changing temperature would take a very long time as you had to wait for the burners to cool down or heat up.

Extractor fans

You might not think they would be that important, but having extractor fans inside modern kitchens allows chefs to work in a smaller space. They no longer have to worry too much about smoke and fumes. One hundred years ago, kitchens needed to be very open to allow gasses to dissipate.

Blenders and mixers

When preparing food in bulk, it would have taken hours and hours to blend or mix different elements together. Thanks to electric blenders, that is no longer the case. Industrial mixers, like those sold by White Mountain Process, have made a real difference. Not only are they capable of handling huge loads, but they’re also far more hygienic than anything created before.

Microwaves

Although no professional chef will boast about the fact he/she uses a microwave from time to time, nobody can deny how useful they can be. The technology has been around for a long time, but it wasn’t until the 1950s when it finally made its way into the average kitchen. Before microwaves were around, chefs and kitchen staff would have had no choice but to heat everything up in saucepans. That obviously required a lot more space.

So there you have it. You should now understand a little more about how kitchen technology has improved the lives of us all. It’s not only professionals who benefit from modern devices; most of us use them in our homes too.

We look forward to seeing you back here soon for some more quirky articles of this nature. Until then, we hope you fully appreciate everything you have and the tools available to you.
